For three decades, Yassamin Sheel has dedicated herself to ensuring that young people have access to a quality education. In January 2024, her efforts were recognised in the King’s New Year honours for services to children.
As the SCITT Lead for United Teaching, Yassamin reflected on the recognition, saying: “If someone had told the Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) version of myself 30 years ago that I would receive an MBE, it would have seemed unimaginable.”
A career dedicated to making a difference
Looking back at her career, Yassamin said: “Throughout my time as a teacher and leader in schools, and in my current role as a SCITT Lead, my ambition has always been to ensure that young people have access to a quality education.
"The phrase ‘services to children’ in the MBE notification resonated deeply with me, as it reflects the core reason many choose the teaching profession, as well as United Teaching’s purpose – to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children.”
Determined to make an impact
Yassamin believes her upbringing and parental support are both key contributors to her achievement.
She shared: “My parents arrived in this country with nothing but their character and faith, and they instilled in me and my siblings the belief that education is paramount, alongside values of kindness, humility, and faith. They are my role models, and without their guidance, I doubt I would have achieved half of what I have.
“My mother is overjoyed, and I know that my late father would have been equally as delighted. As a strong advocate for female empowerment, he was my unwavering supporter. Being a Muslim woman of Somali heritage, born in Sheffield, I always felt his encouragement to succeed in making a positive impact on the lives of others.”
Continuing to make positive change with United Teaching
As one of the leads for United Teaching, Yassamin oversees our school-based initial teacher training programme.
She expressed her appreciation for the chance to work alongside an “exceptional team”, saying: “This team consistently and passionately strives to develop great teachers, committed to bringing out the best in every child.”
Speaking on the importance of teaching, she said: “Our responsibility as educators is to help young minds flourish, ensuring they reach their full potential. To guide them to explore beyond their postcode, challenge them to step out of their comfort zones, and understand the world outside. By doing so, we contribute to their character development and prepare them for success in life. I am honoured to play a small part in that.”
Advice to current and aspiring teachers
Offering advice to teachers, Yassamin said: “Remember, knowledge extends beyond your subject — it's about understanding yourself, learning from mistakes, and promoting personal growth. The best teachers never stop learning, actively seek feedback, and aren't too proud to ask for help.”
In the wise words of my mother, "Aqoon la aani…. waa iftiin la aan" - to be without knowledge is to be without light."
