Riam joined United Teaching over 10 years ago as a science trainee teacher. Today, Riam is one of our Deputy SCITT Leads, playing a key role in supporting and developing trainee teachers across the partnership.
A role built around people
For Riam, the best part of the job is being there for trainees at every stage of their journey. "I love supporting trainees throughout their entire journey," she says, "from reviewing applications and sitting on interview panels to delivering training sessions." Watching that journey unfold, from a nervous applicant to a confident, reflective teacher, is what keeps her energised. "Seeing trainees grow in confidence and develop into skilled, reflective teachers is the best part of what we do."
A memorable year in the classroom
Before moving into SCITT leadership, Riam spent many years in the classroom herself, and one cohort in particular has stayed with her. Teaching Psychology gave her plenty of standout moments, but one class was exceptional: over half achieved an A or A* at A Level, and every single student came away with at least a B. "Seeing their pride and excitement on results day is something I will always remember."
Watching former students become teachers
Riam taught Science and Psychology at Paddington Academy for many years, and it's a moment closer to home that she counts as her proudest career achievement. A number of her former pupils have since trained with United Teaching themselves and are now working in schools across the country. "Supporting their journey into the profession has been incredibly rewarding."
Final reflections
Riam's advice to trainees and colleagues alike is one she comes back to often:
"For every minute spent organising, you gain an hour."
It's a principle that has shaped her own career, from the classroom to SCITT leadership, and one she continues to share with the trainees she now supports.
