From passion to profession: Jasmine's journey into teaching

For Jasmine, teacher training was the perfect opportunity to combine her passion for working with young people with a rewarding long-term career.

After studying History, Politics and Philosophy at Newcastle University and completing an MSc in Psychology, she chose to pursue a PGCE qualification with United Teaching, while building on her experience working in schools.

"I had worked with young people since leaving university and wanted to develop my skills further while building on my pastoral experience," she says.

Teaching felt like a natural next step.

"I wanted a career where I could make a difference every day. I'm really passionate about social mobility and helping young people realise their potential."

Learning in the classroom from day one

One of the things Jasmine has valued most about herUnited Teachingtraining year is the opportunity to learn through real classroom experience while being supported by experienced teachers and mentors.

A typical week includes teaching Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils, planning lessons, taking part in training sessions and contributing to wider school life.

"Every day is different, and there's always something new to learn. I've grown so much in confidence since the start of the year."

Support that helps you succeed

For Jasmine, the support she has received throughout her training has played an important role in her development.

"My mentors in school and the United Teaching team have been incredibly supportive. The wider Humanities team are always there to offer advice and share their experience."

Having access to experienced mentors, regular guidance and a network of colleagues has helped Jasmine develop her teaching practice and grow in confidence.

"The support around you makes such a difference. There are always people willing to listen, answer questions and help you progress."

Growing in confidence

Teacher training is a journey of continuous learning, and Jasmine is proud of how far she has come.

One of her proudest achievements was being offered an Early Career Teacher position while also securing her role as Assistant Head of Year 7.

"During Summer Institute, we were asked to write down our 'why'. Returning to pastoral work was part of mine, so achieving that feels incredible."

For Jasmine, the experience has reinforced why she chose teaching in the first place: making a difference to young people while continuing to grow professionally.

Jasmine's advice for future trainees

Her advice to anyone considering teacher training is simple:

"Do it and jump in with both feet. You get out what you put in, so work hard, be consistent and embrace every opportunity."

She also wants future trainees to know that they do not need to have all the answers from day one.

"It's okay to struggle, and it's okay to ask for help. Nobody expects you to know everything."

Jasmine's experience shows that teacher training is about learning, growing and building confidence with the support of those around you. For anyone considering a career in teaching, it can be the start of a rewarding and fulfilling profession.
