United Teaching’s Summer Internship offers university students a meaningful introduction to life in the classroom. For this trainee, the experience not only shaped their understanding of the profession but also inspired them to continue their journey by training to teach with United Teaching. Now an Early Career Teacher, they reflect on the impact the internship had in the early stages of their teaching career.
When applying for the United Teaching Summer Internship, they were looking for real classroom experience, something that would help them decide whether teaching was truly the right path. “I wanted real classroom experience to help me decide whether teaching was right for me,” they explain. “The United Teaching programme really stood out because of its strong mentoring and hands-on approach.”
From the start, the internship gave them the balance of support and independence they needed. They observed expert teachers, tried out strategies, and received regular feedback that helped them grow quickly. “I felt supported but also trusted to learn by doing. The feedback really built up my confidence.”
The experience not only strengthened their skills but also shifted their understanding of teaching as a profession. “It opened my eyes to how impactful and fulfilling teaching can be, while also giving me a realistic understanding of the workload and the rewards.” By the end of the internship, they knew they wanted to take the next step with United Teaching. “I already felt like part of the school community.”
That sense of support continued throughout the application process. "The help I received was strong, personal, and incredibly reassuring, from interview preparation to being connected with a government advisor." Having someone check in regularly, and someone to read through drafts of their personal statement, made the process feel far less daunting. Their mentor played a huge part in this and still does. “That support hasn’t stopped. Having a weekly mentor session is so useful, and I never feel afraid to ask for help.”
Now in their ECT years, they can clearly see how pivotal the internship was in shaping their teaching journey. Many of the skills they use daily, like classroom management, lesson planning, and reflective practice, began during that first placement. “It was a key stepping stone that built my confidence early on.” They've continued to grow in confidence and adaptability and take great joy in watching their pupils progress. “My favourite part of teaching now is building relationships with students and seeing their progress over time. Knowing I make a difference is incredibly rewarding.”
