This bursary is a one-off financial support payment, funded entirely by United Teaching, and is available to a limited number of candidates in selected schools.
Training to teach is a big decision, especially when it comes to balancing your passion for the classroom with the practicalities of everyday life. That’s why, from September 2025, United Teaching is trialling a new £3,000 bursary to support aspiring Primary teachers on our fee-paying route.
Designed to make the path into teaching more accessible, it is available to full-time applicants on the fee-paying route in ten participating schools across the country.
Although the bursary does not cover tuition fees, which remain the responsibility of the trainee and are usually funded through student loans, it provides a tax-free £3,000 grant to help with living costs such as travel, supplies, rent or other essentials during your training year.
This is a pilot programme with limited places. Our aim is to offer practical support to candidates who are committed to teaching but may have concerns about managing the financial side of training.
How it works
Our fee-paying route costs:
- £9,000 for PGCE with QTS
- £7,250 for QTS only
These fees can be funded through student and maintenance loans, subject to eligibility.
If you apply to the fee-paying route at one of the ten participating schools listed below and are accepted onto the programme, you will receive the £3,000 bursary, paid in ten monthly instalments starting in September 2025. Payments are tax-free and sent directly to your account each month.
You are free to use this support in any way that suits your needs, whether that is rent, travel, or daily living expenses.
