Initial Teacher Training Year
We want to give our trainees the best possible experience as they embark on their teaching journey. That's why before training begins, you will be invited to attend an induction at your host school, where you will take part in various activities that will support you when you start, as well as meeting key people that will be supporting you throughout your training year.
Your trainee year will start with a 10-day summer institute (28 June - 11 July 2024) based at one of our regional training centres, with some remote delivery too. You'll attend interactive sessions led by teaching experts to help you feel prepared for entering the classroom in September. It's also a great opportunity to meet your fellow trainees for the first time!
You will then spend your academic year in your host school. On Fridays, you'll attend training sessions led by our experts, covering a range of topics from behaviour to subject knowledge. This is also an opportunity to reflect on your week and share your stories with your fellow trainees.
In addition, you will complete a second placement at a contrasting school. This provides opportunities for you to experience a different school setting, further enhancing and developing your teaching knowledge and skills.
You'll be assessed throughout the year based on your classroom practice, measured against the Department for Education's Teaching Standards. There are two additional academic assignments for those studying for a PGCE, assessed by our university provider.
